A New Form of Medical Discrimination for Cannabis Consumers!?
Medical Panels Are Now Pushing to Cancel or Delay Surgeries For Cannabis Consumers
Unfortunately, medical discrimination for cannabis users is not new.
But there’s a new development in 2023 due to the rise in state legalization…
(Because apparently, 1 in 10 Americans are now estimated to be regular cannabis users!!)
Influential medical panels are pushing that if you're going to have surgery, your anesthesiologist needs to ask you about your cannabis use first.
And they are prepared to either cancel or delay your surgery if you tell them you consume—or if you test positive for cannabis.
It’s all in this article from Daily Mail.
Some of it makes sense. Some of it does not….
The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) is arguing that, allegedly, patients who consume are at a higher risk of heart attack when given anesthesia.
This is because cannabis acts as a vasodilator, meaning it lowers your blood pressure and can increase your heart rate.
They also argue that post-operative pain medication can be less effective for cannabis users.
According to the ASRA, this puts regular cannabis users at higher risk for Opioid Use Disorder after surgery. 🙄
So they are recommending that surgery be pushed back at least 2 hours until after someone has consumed.
Finally—this is the real kicker—they don’t think that patients who appear to be “high” can properly give their consent for surgery.
While some of their concerns seem valid, others are clearly due to a continued lack of understanding of this plant, and the stigma attached to its use.
Apparently this is becoming a recurring problem for them, with the article stating, “This is a daily occurrence. This is the norm now to see patients presenting for surgery who are using cannabis, whether medicinally or recreationally.”
And while doctors are concerned about cannabis usage becoming the norm, around here, that’s what we call progress! 🙌
I just hope that the medical establishment catches up to this truth sooner than later.
